[Verse 1]

I came up under rain and grime

With a badge that barely held its shine

Just a street copper, thin and mean

On the worst damn beat you ever seen

I knew the alleys by their smell

Knew every liar a little too well

And every time I bit my tongue

It was a miracle I stayed young

[Pre-Chorus]

Then the city learned my name

Like a bruise learns every game

I kept my head low, boots on fire

And prayed nobody called me higher

[Chorus]

I was a street copper

Just a street copper

(Just a street copper)

And I did not ask for more

Now they call me Sir Samuel

Head of the Watch, Duke of Ankh

I said, “That’s very kind of you”

Then went and muttered, “Well, damn”

[Verse 2]

They put a sign on the door

Like I’d been waiting for a war

But I had mud on my cuffs and soul

And a temper nobody could control

I wore the city like a scar

Kept the hard truth in a flask jar

If justice had a smell, you’d know

It was wet wool and old tobacco

[Pre-Chorus]

And every polished little man

Tried to hand me a better plan

I gave them all the same old grin

The one that says, “You’re lying again”

[Chorus]

I was a street copper

Just a street copper

(Just a street copper)

And I did not ask for more

Now they call me Sir Samuel

Head of the Watch, Duke of Ankh

I said, “That’s very kind of you”

Then went and muttered, “Well, damn”

[Bridge]

Oh, the titles, they came crawling in

Like they had some right to pin

Gold on a man who’d rather walk

Than sit and smile and make fine talk

But I still hear the backstreets call

In every corridor and hall

And if I’m noble, let the record show

I got here dragging my feet real slow

[Final Chorus]

I was a street copper

Still a street copper

(Still a street copper)

Under all that shiny bore

Now they call me Sir Samuel

Head of the Watch, Duke of Ankh

I’ll do the job, I’ll bare the teeth

And thank them later, I suppose

(Well, damn)
